Long Weekend Shopping!

NFL and MLB GM’s went on long weekend shopping sprees this past weekend. Click here to see all the baseball shuffling and click here for the football madness.

The Pirates and Indians were buyers…read that at least 3 times to get the full effect.

I’ll make some nutty prediction now for next year…the Royals and Nationals will be buyers at next year’s deadline…book it, what odds you giving me?

If you predicted the Pirates and Indians with 394 combined losses the past 2 years would be in the thick of pennant races you can’t be sane.

I think it’s great for the league to have teams other than the Red Sox and Yankees making big splashes in the trade market. It’s always fun to cheer for the underdog.

However, I don’t think the Cinderella type runs will be successful. The Pirates are 3-7 in their last 10, including being swept by the Phillies this past weekend. The Indians are in rougher shape, 2-8 in their last 10.

The top 3 winners of the MLB deadline are the Indians, Phillies and Giants. The Indians gave up a lot of potential future talent, but they now have a bonafide ace in Ubaldo. It’s not like he’s a geezer or anything, he’s 27 and should be in the midst of his prime. The Phillies added the right handed bat that’s been sorely missing since the departure of Werth. Hunter Pence is a multitalented beast and is a pure hustle, throwback type of player. The Giants got better offensively and defensively with the additions of Beltran and Cabrera. They need these 2 to gel with the club quickly as the Diamondbacks roll into town today to start a 3 game set and are now just 2 games behind the G-men for the NL West lead.

As for the NFL, I’m still trying to catch up on all the action from the past 4 or 5 days. One team that stands out so far is the Eagles. They were the winners of the top prize in Nnamdi, but they also got solid additions in Babin, Rodgers-Cromartie and Cullen Jenkins. I also kind of like their pick-up of Vince Young, if Vick gets injured they don’t really need to change the offence much as Young has a similar skill set. Vick may also be a positive influence on Young, you know like a hey if I can change so can you thing…ok, maybe I’m going to far now.

Ok, if Mark Sanchez can’t move the ball down the field this year, he is not the answer at QB for the Jets. Not only does he have one of the top O-lines in front of him, but he has weapons everywhere in Holmes, Edwards, Keller and fresh out of chains, Burress. His running backs behind him are also stellar, especially Greene who I think will just go buck this year.

All of this NFL talk is making me itchy, is Madden 12 out yet?

Gotta go and start my fantasy football draft list…pumped.
