V-Dub Returns: To boo or not to boo?

Vernon Wells makes his first visit to Toronto since the big offseason trade to the Angels. When you think of Wells the first thing that comes to mind is the monster $126 million contract he was signed to in 2006 and the related fallout that came from it. It was thought that he would be a Blue Jay forever as it was thought no other team would be brave/sane enough to take on his massive contract. However, the Angels shocked the baseball world by not only trading for Wells, but also agreeing to take on the remaining $86 million he is owed. The trade is widely felt to be the best move by any general manager this past offseason. Ask any Jays fan about the trade and you’ll never be able to wipe the grin off their face.

Sorry Vernon...Love ya!

It will be interesting to see what kind of reaction the fans give Wells tonight. In my opinion I think they should give him a standing ovation. It wasn’t like he was a player wanting out of the city and just playing out the string (ahem, Vince Carter). He loved Toronto and was active in the community. The man cried when he was traded for god’s sake. He never played to the level that one would expect a $100 million dollar player to play to, but he wasn’t a bum. 3 all-star games, 3 gold gloves and 20 or more home runs in 7 of his 9 full seasons with the Jays is pretty solid. He’s now in a pennant race for the first time in his career and I think Jays fans should be happy for him. Here’s hoping they show a tear inducing video montage of him before the game showing plays like this…

However, memories aside, I’m hoping he K’s 4 times today against Morrow to keep my slim fantasy playoff hopes alive 🙂
